About Secure Remote Access
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) have been developed to allow the use of a public network, such as the Internet, for secure communication. There are essentially, two types of VPN;
- Site to site VPN
- Remote User to Site VPN
In order to overcome the proprietary nature of early VPN's the IEEE came up with the IPSec standard to enable interoperability of VPN gateways. This standard has emerged to be the main commercial standard. The IPSec standard normally uses the Triple DES algorithm for encryption. However more recently a new standard has emerged - AES, which is a more efficient algorithm. Any VPN requires quite heavy processing power to encrypt and decrypt data.
Using IPSec requires the remote client to have software loaded locally, which encrypts and decrypts all data at the client. The gateway device does the encryption and decryption at the remote site. The deployment of IPSec client software to all remote users has created management issues. In 2003 we have seen the development of "clientless" VPN's for remote users, based upon the Secure Socket Layer encryption used to secure web pages. These are ideal for some simple, quick, secure remote user access.

AppGate USB Client
The AppGate USB client is designed to be used on personal computers when connecting to an AppGate Security Server. It will execute in a secure and trusted environment regardless of the configuration of the original operating system on the computer. In addition, it does not access or store any data on the local hard disks on the PC and will therefore not leave any traces or residues when the session to the AppGate server is closed.

SA 2000
The Juniper Networks Secure Access 2000 (SA 2000) SSL VPN enables small- to medium-sized companies to deploy cost-effective remote and extranet access, as well as intranet security. Users can access the corporate network and applications from any standard Web browser. The SA 2000 uses SSL, the security protocol found in all standard Web browsers, as a secure access transport mechanism. SA 6000

SecurID

SecurID Appliance
Used in combination with RSA SecurID authenticators, the RSA SecurID Appliance is designed to validate the identities of users by requiring the user to present a PIN (something they know) along with their token code (something they have) before granting access to valuable network resources.

AppGate Personal Firewall
The AppGate Personal Firewall protects windowsTM systems by checking all traffic to and from the network. It can be used as a standalone product or as a companion to the AppGate VPN clients. Accompanied by an AppGate client, it can be configured to allow only one outbound connection, the authorized and encrypted secure tunnel, when connected to an AppGate server.
